How to measure for your Start-rite shoes at home

start-rite shoe gauge

Start-rite believe it's really important to measure children's feet accurately before buying them every pair of shoes. That's because ill-fitting shoes can have a serious impact on your child's foot health for years to come. To be sure that your child is wearing shoes that fit properly Start-rite has developed a specially designed gauge which can be used at home. The small gauge is suitable for shoe sizes S2 to S8½ and the large gauge is suitable for children with shoe sizes S9 to L12.

Measure at Home

By using the Start-rite gauges you will be able to measure feet for length, width and girth which will when used with the size calculator enable you to determine the Start-rite shoe size and width that your child will need.

To find out how to measure using the gauges watch the Start-rite videos or use the steps below:

Small Gauge

Sit your child on an adult's knee

Hold the Start-rite gauge in your left hand

Place the foot in the gauge holding the heel firmly against the back of the gauge with the left hand and ensure that the toes are lying flat on the gauge

Push the length slider forward so that it rests lightly against the longest toe

Holding the length slider in place, remove the foot and make a note of the length measurement indicated in front of the slider

Take the tape measure provided and wrap it around the foot diagonally from the big toe joint to the little toe joint (the widest part of the foot)

Pull the tape gently to take up any slack and make a note of the width measurement, indicated by the tape's marker

Repeat steps 1 to 7 for the other foot as feet often vary in size Take the width measurement of the widest foot and the length measurement of the longest foot and use the size calculator to find the shoe size for your child

Large Gauge

Place the foot in the Start-rite gauge whilst your child is standing

Hold the heel firmly against the back of the gauge and ensure that the toes are lying flat on the gauge

Push the length slider forward so that it rests lightly against the longest toe

Holding the length slider in place, remove the foot and make a note of the length measurement indicated in front of the slider

Whilst your child is still standing, take the tape measure provided and wrap it around the foot diagonally from the big toe joint to the little toe joint (the widest part of the foot)

Pull the tape gently to take up any slack and make a note of the width measurement, indicated by the tape's marker

Repeat steps 1 to 6 for the other foot as feet often vary in size

Take the width measurement of the widest foot and the length measurement of the longest foot and use size calculator to find the shoe size for your child.
